The current times have taken a massive toll on thousands of people, given how there is a serious lockdown in most parts of the world. So many people are losing their jobs, some are battling with anxiety issues, and others are succumbing to the deadly coronavirus, which seems to have engulfed the whole world in its grasp.
Amid all the news and updates related to this global pandemic being circulated online, another major worry that has been creating waves of fear among people is lockdown weight gain.
There are so many before/after pictures, memes about weight gain and binge eating, and weight loss programs that have been surfacing on numerous social media platforms. A few people have managed to scroll past all of that; however, for many others, it seems that the idea of gaining weight is scarier than being affected by the virus.
Fat-shaming is real, and one can’t ignore the fact that we all have long been conditioned to work hard towards weight loss because being fat doesn’t go according to the beauty standards of our society. Whether you are someone who used to be thin and has gained weight during the lockdown or someone who been large all their life and gained a little more during this period, it doesn’t matter. Being shamed because of your weight is not nice in any case!
It’s time to break this obsession with being ‘thin’ and following all those fad diets that do more harm than good in the long run. It is also essential to realize that the current lockdown has messed up our usual routines, so it’s completely understandable if people are sleeping more, eating more, or just going with the flow.
It’s Time to Stop Worrying
If you’ve gained a few extra calories or inches during this lockdown, that’s completely okay. Worrying about things like weight gain and weight loss, especially among these already depressing times, won’t do you any good. You want to make those fudgy brownies that you’ve been eyeing for a week? Go for it. Are you too lazy to follow an online workout routine? No problem! If you are feeling the pressure from your family and are nervous about what they might say, don’t! Do not succumb to the pressure of pleasing others at the expense of your mental health.
Your Mental Health Is More Important
Regardless of what people around you have got to say, nothing is more important than your mental health. It is essential that you focus on how you really feel instead of how you look. Try to do things that make you feel alive, energized, and positive about your body than something that reminds you of how fat you are becoming, as people might put it.
If those weight-related posts do end up getting to you, perhaps you can go for a walk with your pet if you have one and enjoy the fresh outdoor air, or you can do yoga at home and allow your mind to relax.
Filter Your Social Media
If your Instagram or Facebook keeps suggesting ways to be in shape and tips for weight loss, maybe you need to filter your social media feed. Unfollow all those friends, celebrities, and public pages that have been instilling fat-phobia within you and try to follow those who promote the idea of BBW (big beautiful woman).
Embrace and Love Yourself!
This can’t be emphasized enough, but the ultimate way to feel good and happy about yourself is to embrace and love yourself. The day you start to appreciate you for you and who you really are is the day when nothing else will matter. It’s as simple as this: just like some people enjoy losing weight, there are also a few who actually enjoy gaining weight and there is nothing wrong with that at all! Just be confident and hold your head high because you are the owner of your body, not anyone else.
In doing so, trust your body and let it do its job. You’ll eventually find a way to love it because you are beautiful!
